After fighting in the bloody Civil War and drifting for years in a lawless fog, Arlan Crywood has laid down his guns, turned his back on his own worst actions and fashioned a peaceful existence in the American West of 1880. But when a plague of locusts attack farm after farm, devastating livelihoods across the plains, Arlan knows he must revisit his past to save his family. He leaves his wife and young son to join a gang of desperate and immoral men, who are robbing their way through the West. Determined to adhere to his own moral code and hurt no one, Arlan participates in a series of robberies, earning the begrudging respect of the gang's leader, a man more similar to him than he wants to admit. But when Arlan is unable to prevent terrible and meaningless acts of violence, he knows he must stop these outlaws and find a way to return home. To save himself, his family and his town, he is forced to do the one thing he swore he never would. Facing a dreadful choice, Arlan takes up arms for a final time, risking everything dear to him to seek peace and perhaps, one day, atonement.
