This story is of two families, the Wilsons and the Simpsons. Ken Wilson is a car mechanic and Melvyn Simpson is a banker. the families' paths cross when Jack Wilson transfers from the local comprehensive to Rushmead private school and is bullied by Billy Simpson's gang. From being immensely rich, a series of disastrous events in rapid succession brings Melvyn Simpson close to financial ruin. Billy eventually transfers to the comprehensive school where he finds his true talents. The story is an insight into the world of bullying, drugs, greed, selfishness, snobbery, excessive consumerism, deception and perhaps even wickedness. But there is decency, love and triumph over adversity.
