The year is 1896. Andrew Chetney, a painter who struggles to express himself through his art, is in desperate need of a ticket out of Old Hampton, a small maritime town that is the very definition of foregone glory. Meanwhile, The Inn, a lowly tavern in the center of town is shook up by the unexpected visit of a handful of strangers. A forlorn figure with his face half-hidden underneath a Stetson hat appears to be awaiting the arrival of Jimmy Carnal, a young bourgeois entrepreneur in search of his missing wife. Outside, Henry Creighton, a rowdy do-gooder is caught out by an upcoming storm as he tries to battle his way to the establishment himself.
