While a cholera epidemic rampages around him, a Victorian poet discovers that there is more to his sadness than the lonely existence that haunts him. As a strange darkness overtakes a corner of his small, lofty room in a boarding house in London, the poet begins hearing a woman's voice and a crying child. Believing a ghost has visited him, he begins conversations with the disembodied voice and then subsequently falls in love with the woman, who begins beckoning him into the darkness in which she exists.
