John C Rigdon
The Fortieth Regiment Iowa Volunteer Infantry was enlisted for three years term of service on Nov. 15, 1862. It was mustered into the service of the United States at Iowa City, Iowa, by Captain H. B. Hendershott, United States Army. The Iowa 40th served as reserves during the Siege of Vicksburg but otherwise saw limited combat activity, other than the Battle of Jenkins' Ferry, Arkansas on April 30, 1864. The regiment was mustered out of service Aug. 2, 1866, at Fort Gibson, Cherokee Nation (Indian Territory).
