Que Vaina... What does that mean? Well Que Vaina directly translates to "that pod" ... because a vaina is indeed a bean pod. But, Dominicans always use words differently than most Spanish speaking folks. The word vaina can mean anything. A thing. That thing over there. That situation. That attitude. That person who thinks they are the only ice cold Coca Cola in a hot desert. When I say it can mean anything, I mean it! It just depends how you utilize the word in a sentence. The way I use Que Vaina ... means "Damn that's crazy," or "Wow that sucks," or "What luck."The set of anecdotes or stories to follow will make you say Que Vaina ... and maybe even suck your teeth and say "Ay ombe," which means "Aww man." They are not the most devastating you will hear, or the most juicy, but maybe you can relate to them. Maybe you know a friend who went through something like what I am about to share. Or maybe you can read and avoid making some of the mistakes I made, like loving peanut butter.
