Miss Louisa Lake was starting her third Season in London. The first had been exciting, the second disappointing, and this one was tinged with desperation. She had long since realised she was not rich enough, well connected enough or pretty enough to make any impact. Faced with parental criticism and the fear of failure, she knew she needed a viable alternative to the aristocratic marriage her mother so desired.
