Winter survival held special challenges. Just the temperature could kill you, snow and ice storms could trap you, and there were the hazards of smoke and fires caused by faultily heaters, which claim many lives every season. I began a drive through the Rocky Mountains at the start of winter-a fool's journey perhaps, but I was on a mission to see my sick friend, and bring him some of his belongings he had left behind. He might not survive to the spring, and I wanted him to be as happy as possible. But I thought I might not survive the trip...(Based on a true story.)
