Padraig detests Ireland. Slaves sold him in this foreign land of human sacrifice. It is the pagan fortress where his wife died in captivity and his son was stolen from him at birth. It is there that he was kept in servitude, cold and hungry, his life less valuable than his master's livestock. When he finally escapes, his only goal is to put as many miles between him and the accursed place as possible. In Gaul, he learns a message of hope. In the faith of the Romans he finds a way to atone for his failure to protect his family. When Padraig lands once more in Ireland, he is determined to lead the people out of darkness. Ever present is the threat of slavery or, worse, being sacrificed to dark gods. Loegaire, the local chieftain, and his vast army outnumber Padraig and his followers. With every word spoken of Padraig's new faith Loegaire's power erodes, farmers and warriors alike turning away from him and his druids. As sacred groves burn and monasteries are besieged, it is clear to both sides that open warfare is just a breath away.
