Starting from the ending of The Third Beginning, The Third Beginning, Part 2: According to Karen and Robert narrates these two characters version of what is happening in their lives during the same time period. Karen travels from Washington to Freedom, Virginia, to help build a new future with the other survivors. She misses Robert and has to cope without his love. Meanwhile, Robert makes his way down the East Coast, meeting survivors and directing them to Freedom. He finds out a secret that the government kept from them concerning the catastrophic disaster that hit earth. On his journey, Robert finds people of all types and walks of life and a new love interest, yet not all his problems are solved having found more survivors. He decides to return to Freedom, Virginia, ready to face all that is waiting for him.
