Paul's Letter to Philemon: Paul's Advocacy on Behalf of Onesimus to Resolve Unfinished Business Paul was a master mentor to young ministers. He employed discipleship and ministerial training that included grounding them in sound doctrine, character formation, and maintaining a clear conscience. All three themes should still be part of discipleship and ministerial training. Maintaining healthy relationships was an important part of character formation and of maintaining a clear conscience. Paul understood that relational discord would taint the testimony of the church and would limit the effectiveness of the ministry. Onesimus appears to have flourished under Paul's tutelage to the point that Paul wanted him to continue as an assistant in the ministry. However, Onesimus had a problem. He was a runaway slave and subject to capture at any time. Plus, if Paul kept Onesimus with him, he was condoning what Onesimus did in stealing from Philemon. The dilemma and Paul's effort to resolve their unfinished business is the motivation for this letter. We will examine the seven arguments Paul makes for Philemon to treat Onesimus with leniency and to release him from servitude. Here Is A Preview Of What You'll Learn...
