William Wilson
Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe's classic tale of a criminal who calls himself William Wilson, and who meets his doppelgänger at a boarding school. For many years after leaving the boarding school, William Wilson finds that his doppelgänger suddenly and mysteriously reappears whenever he attempts to commit a particularly evil crime. First published in 1839, "William Wilson" was adapted for the screen in Germany by Stellan Rye and Paul Wegener in 1913. A second German movie was made in 1926 by Henrik Galeen, and a third one was directed by Arthur Robison in 1935. In 1968, the story was turned into one of the segments of "Spirits of the Dead," a French-Italian movie directed by Roger Vadim, Louis Malle, and Federico Fellini.
