The year is 2045, and Monsignor Beresford learns that the United Provinces of Greater Britain has finally agreed to allow the Special Vatican Police to investigate crimes committed against members of the Roman Church and that he is to head the SVP in Britain and promoted to the rank of Commander. Two days after his welcome home party, held in his childhood home of Bardney Palace, two men discovered the body of a young woman in the ruins of the Benedictine Abbey, in the Village of Bardney. The woman, Sarah Baines, was the Mother Superior of the Ordo Sancti Katherinae Alexandriae. Sister Johnson, who holds the rank of Detective Chief Superintendent in the SVP, aids Monsignor Beresford in his investigation.
