Jeff Burton has bipolar disorder. His was a late diagnosis. At the time of writing this book in his sixties, he has achieved an uneasy detente with the illness thanks to navigating a maze of medications and his own efforts through talk therapy and meditation. His journey was not an easy one but, in the end, hopeful. For those with bipolar disorder, this book provides an illustration of the constant quest for relief from the illness. For friends and relatives, it may help to encourage more compassion and understanding in the face of the more difficult facets of the illness in a loved one. It is not a medical treatise. Although it contains lifestyle advice, this is not to be considered 'expert' advice. Patients should always consult appropriate professionals before making any changes. This book should be considered as part of a conversation, the observations of one person with bipolar disorder which may prove helpful to others. Because of this, the tone of the book is deliberately conversational, sprinkled lightly with humour. Containing poetry, humour, biography and short reflections, the book aims to make the reading experience palatable. It is to be hoped the reader finds it so and recognises the heart of a fellow traveller revealed within.
