At long last, the evil sorcerer Cabrikan rises, marshaling an army of foul beasts and preparing to march upon Lothelliar and take power over all of Imenras. The staggering task of rallying the people of Imenras to defend their capital falls to the young enchantress Mirrell. Along with a motley group of allies, she scrambles to gather enough forces to mount an effective defense, fighting against hopelessness, treachery and political inertia at almost every step. The task seems so daunting that Mirell and her friends begin to wonder whether their defense will be enough, not to defeat Cabrikan - which seems hopeless - but to slow him enough to save anything at all.
