John Keillor
Rainmaker depicts the underside of Canuck consciousness. These stories display their country's character with patriotism and video game energy, sometimes told in alternating first person perspectives so you're in the characters' heads, soaking up their sensibility.
In one story, a multicultural call centre is destroyed by a herd charging buffalo, a storm of bone and multitudes. In another, Toronto's being flooded by giant beavers that are worshipped by beaver cults ranging from passive to terroristic. This Explosive Canadiana is our comic mentality, expressed through quirky stoic immutability in these mostly action/thriller tales.
The first four stories stand alone while the final four make up The Four Cities Quartet, a continuation of the Epstein Element Series following the novel Four Cities.
