Life is harsh for all but the elite in Kutaba, an impoverished backwater of a country in Africa. But for Bartley Ryan, the number two in the Irish Embassy, it is a matter of surviving the torrid climate, weaving his way around the inept Kutaban bureaucracy and avoiding another bollicking by an Ambassador who despises him. At first, he tries to shrug off allegations of corruption relating to a development project funded by his own government, but as evidence of a secret genocide unravels connecting a shady Kutaban Minister and a major international oil company, he is shocked out of his normal lethargy.
