In book one Sarah and Nathan undergo the ordeal of being captured and then rescued. They rehabilitate at the Fort then return home. Upon returning to their home they find a burned-out cabin with only the rock chimney standing. Pa said it would last a lifetime.

Sarah, Nathan, and Pa set out to rebuild the cabin and to put crops into the ground hoping to return to a normal life. That worked well into the fall when an unexpected newcomer becomes part of the family and with all the adventures and misadventures that follow that. Book 2 is full of surprises for the readers as they follow this family in the pioneer days of old Kentucky.
