Will Shumate moved quickly toward the Union captain using the sturdy backside of his knife to block the sword's downward motion. He followed with a three-sixty twist, casting the sabre aside and thrusting the Bowie deep into Corban Nance's forearm.

Blood spurted from the Captain's arm as he grabbed it with his left hand. The Bowie maneuver also had severed tendons, rendering the hand and arm useless. Nance gasped in disbelief. Will backhanded his adversary, slashing with the sharp clip to slice Nance open from shoulder to hip. He followed the move by running him through.

The Captain fell, wide-eyed and mouth gaping in disbelief.

"You can't do this!" Nance cried. "I'm going to be a general! You've killed me! I can't die like this!"

"Maybe you're right," Shumate replied, lowering the blade to the Captain's throat.

"This is for killing my wife," he said, slowing stroking from left to right. "Rot in Hell!"
