In "Chasing Fate," the adventures of the Quigley Family continue. The events cover the time period of 1980 through 1989. The younger generation has grown up and is expected to don the mantle passed on by the older members of the family, making many younger members trembling for fear they won't measure up. A new menace arises in the form of a triple-demonic being called the Atrox. Each of those threatened by this abomination are surprised at their lack of fear and they begin to think that maybe they are Quigleys after all. Another character enters the scene as Matthew Angeli, son of not one but two powerful Beings: Michael the Archangel and Lucifer, the former Prince of Hell, matures and heads toward the same goal as Mawdie and Carissa: being a doctor. He, too, is visited by the Atrox and dismisses them by threatening to call one of his fathers. Like the Quigleys, he is surprised that he's not frightened by the apparition. Ultimately, Matthew joins Mawdie and Carissa in the clinic in which he's always planned to work. There, a confrontation takes place that requires the Old Man's interference. But He never interferes does He? Except when He does.
