Captain Rusty Sage rides into Buckhorn Texas after being Honorably discharge from the Texas Volunteers at the end of the Civil War. Rusty finds that his family and their ranch has been wiped out. With nothing left for him in Texas, he heads north and ends up at the Rocking Horse Ranch in River Bend California as a ranch hand. Once he is hired by the ranch owner Jim Riley, he becomes involve in tracking down rustlers and protecting the ranch from raids by the Slash/Bar Ranch owner George Bancroft who is also the owner of the Bank in River Bend. Jim Riley has a daughter named Mary and Rusty and Mary fall in love, but their relationship is stressed by all the problems caused by Slash/Bar.
