Lysette Stratford is to sacrifice her future to save the family estate by marrying Count Soustelle, a man she detests. When her brother offers her an alternative, she and her uncle covertly board a ship headed for Jamaica and the family's sugar plantation. Lysette is also running from guilt over the dueling death of a young man. To her dismay, Devon Trumane, the brother of the dead man, is aboard ship. Worse, within hours of putting to sea, he is called upon to treat her for a severe bout of seasickness. It is the beginning of a doomed relationship, but Lysette can't control her heart and is incredibly drawn to Devon. She tries a number of times to confess her involvement, but is fearful of seeing his devotion turn to disgust and hatred. Devon finds the girl to be an unfathomable conundrum. The desire is in her eyes, her kiss is heaven's delight, yet she refuses to surrender her love. When he learns of her engagement, it only makes him more determined. He vows to find a way to free her from the betrothal ... even if it means losing her forever.
