The initial section of the volume identifies key R& B performers and supplies print resources outlining their careers. The second section depicts several record companies that were particularly important in fostering the expansion of R& B music following World War II. The next five sections of the book survey specific R& B recordings -- vocal hits, instrumental tunes, and Christmas numbers -- that were released between 1945 and 1960. Contemporary compact discs featuring illustrations of these original recordings are also enumerated to encourage exploration by 21st century listeners. The Appendices in this volume explore and comment on specific CD compilations of artists and recordings listed earlier in the study.
