A gang of robbers holds up a Montana bank taking all the bank's money as well as valuables from the bank's customers including a heavy potato sack being held by a woman. As they return to their mountain hideout, they discover that the sack holds a baby boy. They call him Tater and raise him to be a bandit like themselves. Tater is taught to shoot and hunt. As the boy grows, he participates in the gang's dirty business. When the gang falls apart and Tater is left on his own, he turns from robbery to being a bounty hunter; but instead of tracking down criminals, they somehow come to him. Tater works for a couple of ranches and helps escort a wagon train to the Washington Territory; but he always returns to his home, a cave deep in the Beartooth Mountains. He spends time with a band of Blackfoot Indians and finds the love of his life. From stolen gold and rewards from bounty hunting, Tater's bank account grows along with his legend.
