Pickup
Michael Tracy Blair
Pickup is a story of the attempts of its male protagonist to pick up the pieces of a life broken by parental abandonment, drug and alcohol abuse, and memories of sexual predation. He's a young man, poorly-educated and largely unprepared and unwilling to take on the responsibilities of a husband and father. The heart of his story is that of his new wife. She is already a strong Christian, drawn to her husband by his fumbling efforts to save himself, but also tormented by her own father's death, the strange behavior of her younger brother, and her deep and fruitless desire to have a baby girl.
