Kelitha Spence, a.k.a. Special K, was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She is a first-generation American of Cuban and Jamaican decent. As a teenager grappling with her identity and sense of purpose, Kelitha discovered I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, which launched Kelitha onto a journey of acceptance and transformation. For the first time, she began grappling with her Caribbean identity and accepting her unique self for who she was. Over the years, the ability to accept herself by embracing her identity unearthed her purpose, which is to inspire others to embrace and accept their uniqueness and use it to make a positive contribution to the world-a contribution only they can give. Her poems are a reflection of her journey, and hopefully an inspiration for many to actualize their full potential. Kelitha is a poet, a seasoned teacher, a mother, a daughter, a sister, and a good friend. She can be found mentoring, motivating and inspiring one-on-one as well as encouraging in churches, community meetings, and at college lectures. This book gives some insight into part of the wonderful, powerful woman she is. Hopefully, it inspires all people to become as powerful as they were meant to be.
