When Rafe wakes up, he is in the arms of Ariel St. Clair, a woman with secrets of her own. She has fled from her home in San Francisco to escape her stepbrother's sexual obsession and her stepmother's evil schemes. When she saw Rafe half-dead on the trail, she couldn't simply pass by.

Rafe and Ariel agree to stick together until they reach Jackson, a mining camp in the California Mother Lode.
