It is 1937. Joanne is nearly fourteen, she's bored with school and her life in the quiet city of Lichfield holds no excitement for her. Despite her father's objections she believes she is grown-up enough to leave school and she's determined to do so. Twenty miles away Barry is the same age but he's enjoying learning until unexpected tragedy strikes his family. They had little to start with and now, with his father gone, Barry must grow up and become a man overnight to keep them all from starving. At the same time across the Atlantic the snow is deep but Jimmy doesn't mind. He too is bored with the life he's leading but at seventeen he considers himself already grown up. He's more than ready to leave the tiny town of Grafton behind him and knows how he's going to do it. These are the threads of three young lives. Each has reached a place where they are ready to change and the weavers of all our fates take them, twist them together, tear them apart again and then cross and re-cross them until they have created the tapestry of their lives.
