This book covers the period from 1843 - 1881, and it is the story about a Spanish girl who at the age of nineteen is captured by a band of Apache Indians. She ends up falling in love with this enchanting country, and also with a sub-chief of the band, who was called Shash. After the tour Shash takes her back to her parents, and as per her request, he returns to get her in thirty days. They marry in accordance with Apache customs, and she takes the name Doolé, which means Butterfly. Doolé spends the remainder of her life trying to help her adopted people assimilate into the white man's society, during the period, that white men are invading Apacheria, with the intention of taking this country for themselves.
