In this anthropomorphic fantasy, Callie is a gladiatorial slave to the reigning bear clans. Through a harrowing experience, she manages to escape their dungeon only to be lost in a world she has never known. The swashbuckler Gethen saves her, but the pair find a new host of problems after a run-in with the local pirates allied with the bears. They are rescued by a likable rodent named Filtch and his lover Viviauna. Exchanging services, Callie agrees to help with the pirate problem if they agree to help her, to rescue her sister still held prisoner in the slave pits of the bears.
