Murphy Dodge is en route to a Montana elk-hunting trip when his truck is struck by lightning. Though rattled, he doesn't think much of the strike until he notices that the buildings and roads, which were fine before, are suddenly dilapidated. Finally, the truth dawns on him: the lightning strike has sent him into a postapocalyptic future.



Murphy wanders the wilderness, chasing lightning storms with the hope that another strike will send him home. One day, he spots a woman, Zoe, who has found herself in the same predicament. The two develop a complicated relationship as they face their bizarre new reality and look for a way back.



Though Murphy and Zoe are in the future, the surreal Montana wilderness feels like the distant past. Before these reluctant time travelers can solve the larger problem of returning to their own time, they must survive life in the wilderness and with each other. But being the last two people on Earth isn't easy: they quickly discover that their passions are as unpredictable as the lightning storms they chase.
