Joe and David Dylan are secondary school students from Townsend, Tennessee, on the "quiet side" of the Smoky Mountains. That means tourists tend to go to the attractions in busy Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, making Townsend more of a peaceful country retreat. Joe, at eighteen, is a senior at nearby Heritage High; while David, at seventeen, follows one year behind. LeRoy Puckett from Alabama is a wanted man. Though wise enough to elude all wildlife conservation officers and law enforcement officials in the Hunstville area, he is about to be brought up on federal charges. Since the scene is hotter for him in Alabama; Puckett decides the illegal trade in bear parts to be most profitable. The despicable Puckett creates a thriving poaching business overnight, operating out of Cades Cove. Selling two black bear gall bladders alone makes him $25,000.00 dollars in a matter of nine days. Detective Ted Black is the senior Wildlife Conservation Officer in the U. S. National Park Service. He is a seasoned wildlife scientist and amazing biologist. But if Black is to go after Puckett with DNA evidence, he will need help. He will need witnesses who know a little bit about law enforcement.
