Hezbollah evolved as a state-sponsored, distinctly anti-Israeli organization-first as a military instrument of Syria, and then as Iran's strategic asset. When the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) was expelled from Jordan in 1975, it moved into Lebanon and spurred the growing Muslim majority to challenge the Maronite Christian government.
