In 520 BC, God spoke to the nation of Judah by the word of Haggai and Zechariah. At their urging, the Judahites began the work of rebuilding the Temple on the foundation that had been laid some years before. A work that may never have been completed, without their exhortation. This volume is a comment on the plain meaning of the "English Text" of Zechariah and Haggai, as that text is presented here, in an original adaptation of the "American Standard Version." Haggai "does not have an apocalyptic bone in his whole body, or an End-of-Days thought in his entire brain. " His "heart is set fully on the things that are or that are very soon to be" (p. 62). By contrast, much of what Zechariah proclaims is thoroughly apocalyptic. Like Ezekiel, and Daniel, and the Revelation given to John the Apostle; he often looks toward and into the very climax of human history and the dawning of eternity, with the Advent of the "One Who Is Sent." Even so, a strand of timelessness runs through all that Zechariah and Haggai behold, so that whosoever looks on with them will discover both insights for their own day and time, and everlasting truths that endure forever. The sightings and visions reported by these faithful prophets inspired a generation to trust and obey God for the building up of his Temple. More than this, the word of the LORD delivered by Haggai and Zechariah still stirs the faith of succeeding generations to stake their very lives on the saving power, the tender mercies, and the amazing grace of "God's Servant - the Branch. "
