English Vocabulary in Action: Duos (1) is the first in the series presenting a novel way of learning vocabulary and taking a learner from the Pre-Intermediate B1 level, as defined by CEFR (the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) to the Advanced level C2, as defined by CEFR. The book consists of 400 sets of two sentences each where a learner is supposed to fill in the gaps in both sentences with the same word, which can be found in the suggested answers A, B or C. In the first part (Basic Vocabulary) the words required are words commonly used in everyday English. The level of difficulty tends to rise with every sentence, though, and soon a learner has to deal with more and more difficult vocabulary items in the second part (Advanced Vocabulary). The sentences are structured in such a way that a learner will usually know one of the meanings required but may be intellectually excited to find the other, more unusual and less common usage of a given word or phrase. The book comes with a complete key.
