Feeding the guns
Mary Bradley-Cox
My journey to writing this book began with a war memorial and a mystery as to why my great-uncle's name had the wrong first initial. I knew virtually nothing about the First World War, but as I dug deeper into my great-uncle's life in the Royal Field Artillery, I became fascinated by all aspects of his military life. The provision of ammunition to the field guns was not a job for the faint-hearted: it was dangerous and hard, and many soldiers were killed undertaking the perilous work. Edmund Watts was one of thousands of young men who enlisted in the British Army during World War I: many of them did not return home. This is Edmund's story.
