Ned Bayne - Beyond the Horizon Jim Holladay

Young Ned and Martha, his lifelong girlfriend are being urged to marry, but he is drawn between his itch to see what lies beyond his peaceful little valley and the aching desire of both of their mothers to become grandmothers. He decides to travel for a year or so, with Martha's blessing, and then settle down. The country is unsettled and wild and full of problems caused by the recent Civil War. During his adventure he becomes of age and discovers the pleasures and perils of life and then returns to find problems at home.
