Gertrude MacLeish, the eldest of five surviving children, was a very ambitious woman, but she had limitations. She never learned to read or write, and although she was illiterate, she was smart enough to know this lack was much like a handicap. In her eyes, her limitations were endless, and she was just not happy with what she had discovered about herself. Her difficult and challenging life only motivated her to turn her failures into successes. However, this was proving a little stressful for her and many times she felt that she would just throw in the towel. It seemed everything she touched ended in disaster. Against all odds she fell in love and marry a man who loved her regardless of all her problems and against the objections of his parents. After his death her challenges got worse but she was lucky to find love once again.
