In the midst of the Protestant Reformation, which is breaking up Rome's ecclesiastical hold on Germany, Heinrich, a twenty-two-year-old former student of Wittenberg University, is on a covert mission to gather materials for Martin Luther. Secrecy is needed because the Catholic Church has issued an edict for the arrest of the rebellious reformer, who was kidnapped by supporters and taken to Wartburg castle for safekeeping. Heinrich then meets an intriguing Jewish woman, named Rebekah, who is looking for Heinrich. She brings fascinating information about Heinrich's father, who died two years earlier. His mother and sister get involved in learning about the life of Rebekah and the network their husband and father was involved with, which opens up a whole new world of possibilities.
