The North Carolina 54th Infantry Regiment was assembled at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, North Carolina, in May, 1862. It was assigned to General Law's, Hoke's, Godwin's, and W. G. Lewis' Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. The 54th was engaged at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, then guarded prisoners captured at Winchester during the Pennsylvania Campaign. Later it took part in the Bristoe and Mine Run campaigns, the conflicts at Plymouth and Drewry's Bluff, Early's Shenandoah Valley operations, and the Appomattox Campaign. Twenty-three of the men of this regiment were hanged for desertion. A sermon given by Chaplain J. Paris is included in this book.
