On the distant planet of Virdu, child slaves are brought to work and live on their own in the desert while their owners are away. Two of those children, a seventeen-year-old boy named Nemo whose memory has been damaged and a young blue-skinned alien named Baban, live in a cave and scrape together whatever they can to stay alive in the harsh conditions. The friends keep each other going until their world is turned upside-down. A group of prisoners from the expansive empire of Elysia are transferred there to work in the quarries. Nemo goes out one evening to watch them marching across the sand. They are beaten down, weary, and in chains. That is when one of the men stops, looks at him with wide eyes, and cries out his name. Nemo runs back home, but the face of the red-haired man will not leave his mind. With Baban's help, he makes it his mission to discover the secret of the red-haired prisoner. But his quest leads him far from the slave planet and into a world of political upheaval and mystery. Will Nemo's memories of his forgotten past return to him? Could the red-haired prisoner be a link to the childhood that had been wiped from his memory? Or will the stranger rip apart the last bits of hope the two boys held dear?
