The Cold War culminated into the unleashing of the weaponized Red Mist virus. After a disaster at a Soviet missile silo caused the virus to spread in the Motherland, Soviet leaders launched the virus all over the planet, leading to the fall of mankind. Kimber Balas is a survivor. She has only known the world after the Red Mist virus turned people into infected maniacs. She has lived nearly two years with the memory of losing her friend, which continues to haunt her in inexplicable ways. As she battles to suppress these memories, she soon finds out that her temporary safe-haven, an old 1800s army post called the Fortress, is just that: temporary. Her desire is to find continued safety for her family; something they have never fully known. Can she keep them safe from the infected? From the elements? From each other?
