Big city detective Judd Norris and his partner arrive in Leadville amid a spate of unsolved murders, someone strangling the harlots in town. Although confident to close the case quickly, he overestimates his skills, annoyed by how slippery the killer is. To compound matters, the distracting beauty of a dance hall girl named Katy Bell turns his head, reminding him of things he'd given up on.
