Clara's Bible

Leaving Atlanta, Georgia was best for all of us. Mama wasn't "black" and Daddy wasn't "white"; and I guess that left me somewhere in the middle. The year was 1976 and I couldn't wait to hit the road with Mama. Getting out of that shallow-minded town was the cure that we all needed. Daddy was already in California nesting our new home. As the old bitty, our mule of a vehicle, pulled out of the driveway for the last time, I breathed in the air of freedom. I never imagined the chain of events that would alter my life forever. Abducted, probed and confined to a rotting shack on a large plantation, I learned what freedom, and the lack thereof, meant. Finding strength to hold my adolescent tongue, enduring the savage behavior of my abductors, and reading Clara's Bible, I was left with one choice only - to survive.
