Amish Benefit Auctions & Mud Sales Although many Amish visit local fairs and festivals, most people do not realize the Amish have fairs of their own. They do not actually call them fairs. They call them benefit auctions and mud sales. Just the same, the atmosphere of these is most certainly that of a festival, but without the Ferris wheel. Amish benefit auctions are a type of social gathering for the Amish. They also serve to raise money for special purposes. Some of these special purposes are for Amish schools, healthcare, financial aid and even mission or outreach type causes. These Amish benefit auctions are a time and place for them to get together with friends and family much like any other community festival. There's usually a bake sale, homemade ice cream, fry pies, donuts and pies. But you will also find many other wonderful delights, such as elephant ears, corn dogs and other fairground favorites. Quite frankly, you do not know what you might find. In this book, I share many of the common and unusual recipes from my Amish friends and neighbors.
