Sam Harkins and his fiancée Avey Riley Avenir are a long way from the year 2020 and their Seattle home. Stranded on a time-train in the early days of the American Civil War for reasons no one dare explain, they yearn to get back and begin their lives together. While Sam has briefly visited the planet's dark future, he and Avey are compelled to return. In 2084, they're faced with a planet where the air is unbreathable, the water undrinkable, and no one dares question the source of the manufactured food. Watching all of this unfold, Aarden, an artificial intelligence entity, has convinced Sam there's hope for the world. Unfortunately, Sam, Avey and the timkers have to help Aarden gain complete control of The Good's massive systems and, more importantly, their time machine. Hidden in the abandoned suburbs, a clandestine band of rebels has a plan to wrest control of the world from The Good, as a last-chance effort to save what's left of the planet. We meet ordinary people struggling to survive and who are faced with impossibly hard decisions for themselves and their loved ones. This is a story of love, of devotion, of impossible choices, and of imagination. It takes you to a future world where electronic life forms look, act, love and cry just like humans and where desperate people are being convinced to escape starvation in these mechanical shells-for a small monthly fee.
