. E. Herbert is a retired member of the United States Military. He often refers to himself as an "Old Soldier," and like every real warfighter he abhors the use of need for war. Most who suggest that a national use of force is necessary have never gone there, or perhaps they did so long, long ago in a more civilized time, and have forgotten what war does to the men and women who fight in them. Perhaps they also forgot the terrible hardships imposed on the unarmed, nonbelligerent civil noncombatants by the horrific collateral damage imposed by circumstantially or carelessly directed weapons employment.
