The book is a photographic tour of the Yucatán around Cancun with an emphasis on Mayan influences within the modern environment. In this collection of photos, I have attempted to capture a few of the richest and most beautiful combinations for you to enjoy (especially those vacationers who had to hurry back to a job). Much could be written describing these sights but words lack the "punch in the eye" impact of fine images. One unforgettable sight is the intense turquoise waves reflecting on the sugary sand. After several visits to the great Museo Nazional de Antropologia e Historia of Mexico City, I conclude the Olmec and Mayans ancestors must still love stimulating strong colors. Ancient and modern art contrasts bright orange with lush green. Protected portions of carvings on the Coba pyramids still retain pockets of red ocher and strong blue lapis. Cultural richness came about with the blending of Mayan and Spanish plus other foreign influences. This distinctly Yucatán culture is a melange of languages, religions, arts and music traditions. Fine textiles worthy of a Spanish Comtesse's brocade are sold in trendy, jewel-colored silks. Brilliant ceramic tiles brighten stairways with intricate star designs reflecting the Alhambra. Cultural fusion stimulates innovation and variety. The lively architectural styles contrast mission adobes, ranch style, palapa palm thatch and woven sticks to cement structures with sleek steel and glass Pemex gas stations. Architecture and landscaping is visually interesting and innovative in new city spaces. Lastly it is my desire that you may repeatedly savor these images from your armchair. Perhaps these photos will inspire you to experience the Yucatán someday in person, also.
