The idea of a reflection is most often associated with a mirror, with the mirror having the ability to reflect one's clear true self. However, a mirror (and any external object for that matter) only reflects an outside image; one that can be easily distorted by perspective. Oftentimes we rely on external sources to shape our self-image, our values, and our worth. It is only the raw, unfiltered reflections of the heart that can give a clear image of our true selves- entities that were created in the image of God. Mirrors: Reflections of the Heart, a collection of prose and poetry coupled with an auto-biographical narrative account, explores this idea of reflecting one's "true self." The novel takes the reader on a journey with the author, Destiny Nixon, as her self-image evolves, moving from relying on external factors to define who she is, to recognizing and embracing herself in the context of who she is in God. Throughout the book, Nixon grapples with issues of: identity, self-esteem, brokenness, relationships, triumphs and spiritual growth, and explores how all of these factors have contributed to the woman she is today.
