Virginia, circa 1859, on the verge of the civil war in Bourbon County a black man accused of having raped the young miss Maryanne Banner, recently disappeared after the alleged rape, is being lynched in the town square. Shortly thereafter Maryanne is found hanging in her home holding a mysterious suicide note, that only sheriff O'Hara reads, and promptly destroys right away. The book will follow Odell Campbell, young poet born blind, long time friend of Maryanne trying to cope with the terrible loss, until he receives a mysterious memoir written by someone who knew him well, that signed himself "the man who never was". He will meet Laure Fiinkle, young student of French origin, recently moved from Boston, a beautiful girl who secretly works as an abolitionist. The odd two will investigate the content of the memoir, narrating the amazing life of a slave named Gordon, the suspicious suicide of Maryanne, the disappearing of Marcus Parcher, Odell good friend, eventually falling in love. A story about blind prejudice, racism, crime, injustice, and the most powerful and great love and friendship, a page-turner that will literally keep you glued to the story trying to unveil all the mysteries behind Maryanne, her secret lover, Gordon the slave, Marcus Parcher and the invisible man.
